A "2×4" doesn't measure 2 inches by 4 inches. After the lumber gets milled and dried, it's actually 1½ × 3½ inches. If that surprises you, you can see why carpenters need to be comfortable with fractions before they pick up a saw.
A standard U.S. tape measure divides every inch into 1/16-inch marks. Carpenters read those tiny lines all day, every day. Bolts, drill bits, and pipe fittings are all sold in fractional sizes. There's no escaping it on a job site.

How Are Fractions Used in Sports?
A basketball player makes 17 out of 20 free throws. That's 17/20, or .850, or 85%. Three different ways to write the same fraction. Baseball batting averages, football completion rates, hockey save percentages: they're all fractions wearing a decimal disguise.
Time in sports is fractional too. 2½ minutes on the game clock. A 100-meter dash won in 9 7/10 seconds. Olympic swimming decided by 1/100 of a second. Sports are full of parts of a whole that people track obsessively.
A batter goes 2-for-5 on Tuesday and 1-for-4 on Wednesday. What's their two-game average? Lots of people want to average 2/5 and 1/4, but that gives the wrong answer. You add the hits (3) and the at-bats (9) separately: 3/9, which simplifies to 1/3. It's one of the most common mistakes people make when combining rates.

Do Scientists and Doctors Use Fractions?
In medicine, a fraction mistake can hurt someone. A doctor might prescribe ¼ mg of a drug per kilogram of body weight. A nurse might need to give ½ a tablet, or calculate an IV drip that delivers 2⅓ milliliters per minute. There's no room for guessing.
Lab work runs on fractional concentrations. The difference between a 1/1000 solution and a 1/100 solution? Put them over a common denominator and it's clear: 1 part per thousand versus 10 parts per thousand. That's a tenfold difference, and mixing them up could wreck an experiment or throw off a patient's blood test.
A chemist needs a 3/8 molar solution but only has ¾ molar stock on the shelf. The fix: mix equal parts stock and distilled water. ¾ × ½ = 3/8. Done. That's fraction multiplication solving a real chemistry problem in about five seconds.
Probability works this way too. When a researcher says an event has a 1/10,000 chance of happening, that's a fraction everyone can picture, even if the math behind the study is much more involved.
Where Else Do Fractions Hide in Daily Life?
Check your phone. If the battery says 75%, you're looking at ¾ of a full charge. Glance at your fuel gauge near the ¼ mark and you know it's time to stop for gas. Road signs say ½ mile to the exit. Runners talk about quarter-mile splits and half marathons (13.1 miles, roughly 1/2 of the full 26.2). At a fabric store, material gets measured in ⅜-yard increments.
